We made it to the national park around 9AM. Luckily, we beat the crowds and had a beautiful hike up a well maintained trail to the viewpoint. From the viewpoint you can see Guatemala City and the surrounding cities as well as a large lake. On the other side of the mountain on which the viewpoint sits, you are rewarded with a perfect vista of Pacaya! Pacaya is active, and you can clearly see the black volcanic stone drying from recent eruptions. The volcano most recently spewed lava in significant amounts -enough to slide down the mountain- in 2018 and 2021.
Patrick, I love reading about all your experiences and adventures. Keep them coming and be safe.
