This isn’t our first visit to Sequoia National Park, but it is our first time back after two large fires burned a large portion of the land in 2020 and 2021. Most recently, in September 2021, a blaze started by lightning ravaged through the park. Due to steep slopes and inaccessible land the fire burned until December 16th when it was contained thanks to snow and rain storms in the area. Unfortunately 16 sequoia groves were burned damaging and killing an estimated 1,000-2,000 giant sequoia trees. Luckily some groves were spared including the Giant Forest Sequoia Grove we visited. We did see a lot of fire damage driving into and through the park with parts of melted road, mountain sides of burned trees, and mudslides from lack of vegetation.
