We went to Henry Coe State Park, which is just south of the Bay area. It’s in the mountains Southeast of San Jose. The state park is about 89,000 acres large, and is tailored for backpackers. You have to go register in the morning at the park headquarters, and then head out from there. There are multiple developed campsites sites both fairly close to the headquarters and very very far from the headquarters. It would probably take a full week of being out in the back country to cover the entire length of this park. Once you get far enough away from park headquarters, the developed campsites stop existing and it turns into dispersed camping zones. Erin and I aimed to make it to the first dispersed camping zone, known as the Mahoney Zone or Mahoney Meadows.
