As the end of our trip neared, we spent our final 2 days shopping local artisanal goods, exploring the city center, and yes… eating a lot more food. We also did some Mezcal tastings. Mezcal is a very popular liquor in Mexico and over 70% of what is produced is done in the state of Oaxaca. It is made from agave and tequila is a specific type of mezcal. The beverage is typically sipped out of small glass and is sometimes served with an orange slice, lemon/lime juice or Sal de Gusano. Made dried agave worms, chiles, and salt, sal de gusano (worm salt) is something we saw in many places in Oaxaca. Yes, we tried it; yes, it’s very good; yes we bought some to bring home if you want to try it.
